Since the 1980's Venice has been rebuilding its tradition of Carnivale
celebrations on par with Rio or New Orleans. Beginning the second Friday before
Ash Wedenesday, people begin wearing masks and costumes, culminating in the
grand finale on "Fat Tuesday" before the beginning of Lent. The term
Carnivale literally comes from "carne" + "vale", or "goodbye to meat".
