Tues, Feb 7 Rome:
Monday was great weather. We arrived by plane about 8:15 am, and were checked into our hotel room before 10:00. By noon we grabbed a bite in the pizzeria next door and walked to the Forum/Coliseum area. With the sun out, the grass was green everywhere and there were some trees blooming and even a few wildflowers. It could have passed for springtime.
Tuesday we slept late to help recover from the 7 hour time difference. When we got out, we went straight to the Trevi Fountain, planning to get in some more outdoor sights because the forecast was for rain beginning in the early evening and probably continuing off and on through the rest of the week. Just after we got to Trevi, it started to sprinkle. So much for early evening. We had very light rain/drizzle intermittently through the rest of the day. Just enough for umbrellas part of the time, but still decent for determined walkers.
We went from Trevi to the Piazza del Popolo, where there are two famous churches. Then over to the Piazza di Spagna - the Spanish Steps. From there we wove our way back past the hotel to the Pantheon, got a snack for lunch, and on to the nearby Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. This is possibly my favorite church in Rome - the only Gothic style church in the city.
Thu, Feb 8 Rome:
Yesterday we spent most of the day in St Peter's Basilica, then walked around at night on the way back to the hotel. This morning we went back to Piazza del Popolo and went into the church of Santa Maria del Popolo. Then walked to the Vatican again to go through the Vatican Museum. Got there early afternoon and found it CLOSES very early in the winter! Big mistake!!!
Tonight I've reviewed some of the past days' photos and posted two outstanding ones from last night. Long exposure night shots that made absolutely stunning images of St Peters' across the river and of the Pantheon:
